Crate training is the safest means of house training that you can implement with your new dog or puppy. You just want to make sure that you have the cage appropriately sized for your dog. A cage too small will be cramped and uncomfortable and a cage too large will defeat your ousetraining efforts.
You also want to make sure that you get a cage that is going to be appropriate for your dog. Some dogs do better in plastic travel crates, whereas other dogs may do better in wire crates.
